In a world increasingly concerned and conscious of environmental issues, Texas State’s Sustainability Squad attempts to stand out and be a beacon of hope for not just Texas State students but also San Martians. With their dedicated efforts to educate and inspire other students by helping shape and improve university sustainability initiatives for Texas State, this organization is driving a sustainable revolution here in San Marcos.
Since its establishment in 2021, the Sustainability Squad has been no stranger to their share of difficulties but has finally begun to set its foot down and fully solidify itself here on campus.
Just last year clearing out and collecting around 55 pounds of garbage from Purgatory Creek, and another 80 pounds last spring from the Five Mile Dam Park.
With this semester already underway, the Sustainability Squad has events lined up for the following months in which sustainability is the focus for these events.
Such as being hosted this Thursday. Another event they have is, a free and inclusive thrift market available to all Texas State students. The donations are gathered two weeks prior in a Sustainability Squad clothing drive.
This is not the only drive that the Sustainability Squad plans to host, with another plan in November. For Thanksgiving, they hope to give donations to both Bobcat Bounty and the San Marcos Food Bank.
The Sustainability Squad does not run on drives but so much more. Such as spreading awareness about the small things you can do to make big changes. “You can just be as simple as turning off the lights when you walk out of the room, turning off the computer when you walk out of the room, or turning off the water when you’re brushing your teeth. These basic things that you’ve seen, like meaningless, but those are the things that make the big impact,” says Caroline White, the Vice President of the Sustainability Squad.
“This chartered organization is not just set for students but faculty as well,” White said. “This is an interdisciplinary organization, we are not just for environmental majors but all majors,” says Jengo Russel, President of the Sustainability Squad. That allows more people an opportunity to work towards a better future for Texas State and the city.
